Mexico and the Francophonie
Mexico’s participation in the Francophonie is also reflected in its collaboration with Francophone countries in Latin America, Africa and Europe

Mexico, although not a Francophone country, has been part of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) as an observer member since 2014. This membership reflects the historical and cultural ties that Mexico shares with the Francophone world, as well as its interest in strengthening international cooperation in education, culture, human rights and sustainable development.

It is estimated that there are 321 million Francophones in the world in 93 states and that the French language is the 5th most spoken language globally. In October 2024, the 19th Francophonie Summit took place in Paris, and the next summit will be in Cambodia in 2026.
In Mexico, French is the second most studied foreign language, after English. It is estimated that more than 300,000 Mexicans learn French in educational institutions and language centers. Mexico’s participation in the Francophonie is also reflected in its collaboration with Francophone countries in Latin America, Africa, and Europe.
Through educational and cultural exchanges, Mexico seeks to promote linguistic and cultural diversity, as well as cooperation to face global challenges such as climate change and sustainable development. The Francophonie is above all a space for reflection - “un lieu et un milieu” - on issues that are of great interest to Mexico, such as democracy, peace, and human rights.

Although the number of Francophones in Mexico is not as significant compared to other OIF nations, its role as an observer member allows it to expand its influence and collaborate on international projects that go beyond language barriers, fostering dialogue and cooperation on a global level.
