Intentional homicides decrease by 25.8% from September 2024 to May 2025; this represents 22 fewer homicides per day: President Claudia Sheinbaum

• From October 1 to June 8, as a result of the National Security Strategy, 23,417 suspects have been arrested for high-impact crimes and 172 tons of drugs have been seized and 12,045 firearms have been confiscated.
• As part of the Attention to Causes strategy, almost 1.69 million services have been provided in municipalities in nine states.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo highlighted that thanks to the work of the Security Cabinet, intentional homicides decreased by 25.8 percent from September 2024 to May 2025, which means 22 fewer murders per day than in September of last year.

“This is a very important result for the Security Cabinet and shows that the (National Security) Strategy is working. There are four pillars: Addressing the Causes, which has to do with what Rosa Icela (Rodríguez Velázquez, Minister of the Interior) has explained. This involves the entire Fourth Transformation project of directly serving the people, (which includes) Youth Building the Future, support for the people, and this intervention that the Ministry of the Interior is carrying out together with the Department of Crime Prevention at the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection in each area, creating Peace Committees, Peace Fairs, and an initiative to improve public spaces in each area in the municipalities with the highest crime rates,” the President explained.

“The second is the strengthening of the National Guard and, on the state level, the strengthening of state police forces; the third, which has been very important, is the strengthening of intelligence and investigative work to assist the Public Prosecutor’s Office; and finally, coordination. (This has resulted in) 25.8 percent fewer intentional homicides from September 2024 to May 2025,” Sheinbaum explained in the morning press conference known as the “Mañanera”:

The executive secretary of the National Public Security System, Marcela Figueroa Franco, explained that the monthly average of homicides in September 2024 was 86.9 per day and in May 2025 it was 64.5, a 25.8 percent reduction in eight months. Furthermore, May 2025 registered the lowest average number of intentional homicides for the month of May since 2016, which shows the downward trend in this crime.

Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch reported that in coordination with all the authorities that comprise the Security Cabinet, from October 1, 2024, to June 8, 2025, 23,417 suspects have been arrested for high-impact crimes. In addition, 172 tons of drugs have been seized, 12,045 firearms have been confiscated, and 994 clandestine laboratories have been dismantled. As part of Operation Northern Border, since February 5, some 4,180 suspects have been arrested and 3,426 firearms, more than half a million rounds of ammunition, 16,000 magazines, and more than 38 tons of drugs have been seized.

Minister of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez noted that in the six months since the implementation of the Attention to Causes strategy, with the participation of 38 Mexican government agencies, over 1.69 million services have been provided in municipalities in nine states.
